Calling all young talent: Enter kids’ competitions at the Iowa State Fair

DES MOINES – Kids love winning ribbons, especially at the Iowa State Fair! At the 2024 Fair, kids of all ages can join the fun by entering their favorite foods, photos, crafts and artwork.

One cool contest is the Ag Art Contest, split into four age groups: 3-4 years old, 5-6 years old, 7-8 years old, and 9-12 years old. Plus, there's a special category for folks of any age with intellectual developmental disabilities. All you have to do is draw something related to the theme "Farm Fever" on a standard 8 ½"x11" white paper using any colors or materials you like. Entries are due by July 10.

You can find the rules and entry forms for the Ag Art Contest at https://www.iowastatefair.org/visit/kid-friendly-activities.

Mail your entry to:

But that's not all! There are over 40 food categories for kids to enter, from cookies to candies and snacks.

And if you're into other creative stuff, there are plenty of other options too. You can showcase your art skills in Fine Art and Photography, or get crafty with seed art in the Floriculture department. In Creative Arts and Crafts, you can compete in building blocks (Legos), paper crafts and painting. Fabric and thread projects are also welcome.

Entering competitions is easy. Just head to www.iowastatefair.org, check out the categories and submit your entries by the listed deadlines. You can find all the details, including rules, and other forms at https://www.iowastatefair.org/participate/competition. Most entries are due by July 1, but some departments might have different deadlines, so make sure to double-check.

If you need any help with deadlines, competitions, or the online entry system, you can reach out to the Competitive Events Department at competitiveevents@iowastatefair.org or call (515) 262-3111 ext. 207.
