Noreen was born on October 13, 1954, at Grundy County Memorial Hospital in Grundy Center, Iowa, to Jacobus and Esther (Meester) Hemmen. She grew up on a farm near Dike and graduated from Dike High School.
She was united in marriage to Darrel Folkerts on August 6, 1976, at Stout Reformed Church, Stout, Iowa. For 47 years she enjoyed supporting and helping her husband manage their farm. She was foremost a loving wife, mother, and grandmother who cherished her family and time with them. While she enjoyed reading, gardening, and cooking, her real joy was in sharing it with others.
She was a devoted follower of Jesus Christ, often seen reading His word each morning. She and Darrel nurtured each of their children to become Christ followers, through the power of God. She worshiped without ceasing both in the quiet places of her heart and also in choral groups like the Christian Flames and her church choir. Selflessly, she served along with Darrel, on numerous mission trips to help those who needed help the most. Together, they partnered with others to rebuild tragedies into triumphs for God’s glory.
In her humble way, she shared her love with her husband, children, and grandchildren. She knew how to make each person in her family feel loved. One particular joy of hers was to care for her grandchildren and watch them grow. Another joy was her monthly tea times with her sisters and brother, a laughter-filled highlight of her life.
Noreen is survived by her husband Darrel, son Jeremy (Danielle) Folkerts of Naperville, Illinois, son Dana (Tonya) Folkerts of Des Moines, Iowa, daughter Jodi (Sam) Shaffer of Shell Rock, Iowa, daughter Darci (Ken) Scalf of Bondurant, Iowa, 12 grandchildren: Tobias, Abigail, and Nathaniel Folkerts; Drew, Coen, Beckett, and Arden Folkerts; Liza, Margo, and Hazel Shaffer; Crimson and Lex Scalf. Sister Norma (Don) Adams, Brother Delbert (Sandy) Hemmen, Sister Nancy (Ray) Hemmer, Sister Denise (Gary) Abbas, Sister Debra (John) Scott. Brother-in-law Steve (Rose) Folkerts, Sister-in-law Diane (Paul) Terpstra.
She was preceded in death by her parents Jacobus and Esther (Meester) Hemmen.
Memorials may be directed to the family. The Folkerts family will send memorials to various charities Noreen supported at a later date.
