Richard “Dick” Leo McElhaney, 93
Richard “Dick” Leo McElhaney, age 93, of Clarksville, Iowa, was born the son of John and Laura McElhaney on August 29, 1930. Dick graduated from Clarksville High School in 1949.
On Easter Sunday, April 5, 1953, Dick was united in marriage with Betty Jacobsen at First Lutheran Church in Maynard. Shortly after their marriage, the couple moved to Clarksville into the homestead that Dick was born in. He worked at Rath Packing Company in Waterloo, Iowa for 34 years. The couple then went on to open a bait shop from their home and began working as custodians for the Clarksville churches.
Dick was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Clarksville. He enjoyed country music, trout fishing, and being in nature. He and his wife shared many memorable moments dancing to the Tennessee Waltz. Dick’s fondest memories were those spend surrounded by his family and special friends within the community.
On Tuesday, March 26, 2024, Dick passed away at his family home. He was proceeded in death by his wife, Betty McElhaney; daughter, Brenda Marie Verno; his parents; and three sisters, Roslyn Pope, Gladys Wharton, Lucille Boorm; and one brother, Howard McElhaney.
He is survived by six children, Linda (Duane) Griffin of Waseca, Minnesota, Jeanette (Dale) Henry of Vinton, Iowa, Roberta McElhaney of Clarksville, Bruce (Debra) of Grand Prairie, Texas, Laura (Victor) Padròn of Pueblo, Mexico, Paul McElhaney of Graham, Washington; nine grandchildren, and many great grandchildren and other family members.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Friday, April 5, 2024, at St. John Lutheran Church in Clarksville. Pastor Charlie Underwood will be officiating the service. The organist will be Jill Pliner and she will accompany the congregation as they sing “How Great Thou Art”, “Old Rugged Cross”, and “Amazing Grace”. Clayton Kampman, Mike Ruby, Cliff Hartman, Ty Ruby, John McElhaney, and Jerry Manning will serve as Casketbearers. The burial will be at Lynwood Cemetery in Clarksville.
Visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., on Thursday, at Redman Funeral & Cremation Services-Clarksville Funeral Home, and one hour before services at the church. Memorials may be directed to the family. Online condolences may be left at www.redmanfuneral.com
