Neil Bolin
Neil Everett Bolin, age 93, of Clarksville, Iowa, was born the son of Adlai O. and Sarah Flossie (Knight) Bolin on August 14, 1928, on the home farm east of Clarksville. Neil graduated from Clarksville High School in 1945.
Neil served in the United States Army from 1952 to 1954 during the Korean War. Neil was stationed in Seattle and was a member of the Army Marching Band.
On June 10, 1951, Neil was united in marriage with Mavis Quackenbush at the Presbyterian Church in Greene. After their marriage, the couple moved to the home farm where Neil farmed with his dad. In 1960, Neil and Mavis purchased the farm. Neil began working at the United States Post Office in Clarksville in 1968. Neil was one of the last political appointees, assigned by Lyndon Johnson, as a Postmaster. Neil retired in 1996.
Neil was a member of Unity Presbyterian Church until it closed, and currently was a member of United Methodist Church in Clarksville. Neil and Mavis worked with the youth groups in their church. He was a 4-H leader, a football announcer, and helped with wrestling meets. He was a member of the Farm Bureau and was honored by Iowa Guernsey. Neil was a member of the AMVETs, where he served as a Chaplin. Neil was a member of NAPUS and NARFE. Neil played trombone and was the oldest member of the Greater Waverly Municipal band. He also sang in the community choruses. Neil enjoyed traveling and meals with his family.
Neil died Thursday, December 23, 2021, at Clarksville Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Clarksville, of complications of cancer. Neil is preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Mavis, on May 10, 2018; a daughter, Diane Bolin; his parents; and two brothers, Reed and Darrell Bolin.
Neil is survived by three children, Sandy (Larry) Townes of Ankeny, Dave (Pam) Bolin of Clarksville, and Barb (David) Peters of Plainfield; eight grandchildren and three step-grandchildren, Jessica (Nate Lampe) Jensen, JaneAnn Florez, Joshua (Lacie) Jensen, Matthew (Ashley) Bolin, Daniel (Lynn) Bolin, James (Nicole) Bolin, Emily (Brennen) Ott, Kelsey (John) Kaspar, Kevin (Jan) Townes, Bryan (Anne) Townes, and Sean (Amanda) Townes; and twenty five great-grandchildren, Sophie, Gabie, Sarah, Joshua, Anna, Allie, Tanner (Emily), Savannah, Mariah, Jozie, Dakota, Dalton, Tucker, Noah, Kessiah, Foster, Justus, Amara, Vance, Judah, Payton, Claire, Wyatt, Owen, and Brynlee.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., on Wednesday, December 29, 2021, at the Community United Methodist Church in Clarksville, with Pastor Joan Thomas officiating. Organist was Lola Clark and she accompanied the congregation as they sang “O Come All Ye Faithful”, “In The Garden” and “How Great Thou Art”. The burial was held at Lynwood Cemetery in Clarksville with Neil’s grandchildren serving as Casketbearers. Military rites were conducted by Clarksville AMVETs Post #30.
Visitation was held from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday at the Redman Funeral & Cremation Services in Clarksville, and one hour before services at the church.
