Memorial Day observed by Allison AMVETS

The Allison AMVETS tradition of parading Main Street on Memorial Day continued as they honored the memory of fallen comrades. Residents were present on both sides of Main Street to pay tribute to the veterans, and enjoyed the wonderful weather that accompanied the parade. The Allison AMVETS has executed the parade ceremony every year since 1946. This year marks 75 consecutive years, and the wonderful tradition is an important part of both the veterans, and the community.

     Originally known as Decoration Day, the day of remembrance began during the years following the Civil War. It remained a day dedicated to the fallen soldiers of the Civil War, until World War I found the U.S. embroiled in another significant conflict. The holiday then included every war since, and was not officially declared a federal holiday until 1971. Its importance to the community of Allison is highlighted by the fact that it was observed for 25 years before it even became a federal holiday.

     Indoor services also returned this year after being canceled in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
