He married Jurene Janssen on February 17, 1979, at Trinity Reformed Church in Allison. Through this marriage he gained two more children; Kim and Tim.

Robert worked for most of his professional life as a plumber. He also loved working on his farm outside of Bristow. He was big into conservation, planting trees and establishing areas that protected the wildlife but also areas where youth pheasant hunters could harvest birds. Robert was an active member of the Gideons International and had recently served on the Lions Club. Early in his life, Robert was a Boy Scout Leader, gun safety instructor  and member of the Jaycees.

In his free time, Robert liked to hunt and fish. He especially loved fishing at Pine Point Resort in Canada and always looked forward to his annual trip to Southern Iowa to hunt deer with "the gang." Robert also loved to ride his motorcycle and at the age of 70, actually rode to Alaska with his cousin Joe.

Faith was the foundation that Robert built his life on. He was a devoted servant of the Lord. He was baptized and confirmed at Vilmar Church and taught Sunday School for many years. He was a member of a weekly bible study group and also went on a mission trip to Haiti through Vilmar church. Robert also enjoyed speaking at local churches for the Gideons and handing out bibles at local fairs and other events. Robert was a kind man with a gentle spirit and a wonderful witness of a life lived for the Lord.
