Marvin "Rocky" Smith
Marvin “Rocky” Dean Smith, age 92, was born the son of Clark and Rose (Gallmeyer) Smith on May 25, 1929, in rural Bremer County, Iowa. In August of 1951, Rocky enlisted in the United States Army where he served during the Korean War. He was stationed in Korea as a part of the infantry unit and received the Combat Infantry Badge during his service. He was honorably discharged in May of 1953.
On August 25, 1952, Rocky was united in marriage with Lois Lucille Hites. After the service, the couple made their home in Clarksville, Iowa, where they raised their two sons, Travis and Darwin. Rocky worked for the Oliver Tractor Factory in Charles City, Iowa for numerous years and later drove gravel and concrete truck.
In his free time he enjoyed making and selling lawn ornaments, tinkering, wood working, singing, playing guitar and various instruments. He especially loved to ride bike and most of all spending time with his grandchildren. Rocky was also member of the St. John Lutheran Church in Clarksville.
Rocky died Thursday, February 10, 2022, at the Waverly Heath Center in Waverly, Iowa, of natural causes. Rocky is preceded in death by his loving wife, Lois Smith; his parents, Clark Smith and Rose Crosby; two brothers, Lawrence Smith and LaVerne Smith; and one sister, Emma Smith.
Rocky is survived by two sons, Travis (Shirley) Smith of Clarksville, Iowa and Darwin Smith of Clarksville, Iowa; four grandchildren, Rodney (Jody) Smith, Kimberly Smith (Tom Ogle), Sarah Wadey, and Melissa Spillers “Smith”; four great-grandchildren, Skyler Smith, Alexandria Smith, Caleb Wadey and Alizah Wadey; and one sister, Norma Izer of Waterloo, Iowa.
Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, February 15, 2022, at the Redman Funeral and Cremation Services in Clarksville. Pastor Jim Brown from Immanuel United Church of Christ officiated the service. Special music, “Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain” by Willie Nelson, “Waltz Across Texas” by Ernest Tubb, “Keep on the Sunny Side of Life” by the Carter Family, “I Wouldn’t Change You If I Could” by Ricky Skaggs and “Blue Skirt Waltz” by Molly B. was played. Burial was held at Lynwood Cemetery in Clarksville, with Rodney Smith, Sarah Wadey, Jody Smith, Kimberly Smith and Tom Ogle serving as Casketbearers. Military rites were conducted by the Clarksville AMVETS Post #30.
Visitation was held one hour before services on Tuesday at Redman Funeral & Cremation Services in Clarksville. Memorials may be directed to the family. Redman Funeral & Cremation Services in Clarksville was in charge of the arrangements. Online condolences may be left at www.redmanfuneral.com
