Irene Day
Irene M. Day, 94, of Dumont, passed away Wednesday, December 29, 2021, at the Shell Rock Healthcare Center. Visitation was held from 3:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m., Sunday, January 2, 2022, at the Dumont Reformed Church. Funeral services were held at 10:00 a.m., Monday, January 3, 2022, at the Dumont Reformed Church. Burial took place in the Dumont Cemetery.
She was born March 3, 1927, in Hampton, to Herman and Clara (Spangenberg) Muhlenbruch. Irene was baptized and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hampton. She graduated from Hampton High School, the class of 1945. Irene furthered her education at Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls and enjoyed teaching at rural schools. On June 21, 1947, she was united in marriage to Harry G. Day at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hampton. To this union, three children were born: son Larry, daughter Marcia and a stillborn daughter.
Irene was always a hard worker and instilled that in her family. She worked at many different jobs including cooking at restaurants, working at the Dumont Locker, bookkeeping for Dumont Lumber Company and Dumont Implement. She was a devoted caregiver for her husband for 58 years, along with being a loving and dedicated mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. She enjoyed gardening and canning fresh fruits and vegetables, at one time caring for three gardens at once. She was a member of the Dumont Reformed Church, as well as active in the church guild, American Legion Auxiliary and the DAV Auxiliary, and was a board member of the Dumont Cemetery Society. Irene enjoyed bowling and her weekly bible studies. She enjoyed reading the daily paper and always cheered on the Hawkeyes and the Cyclones. She loved spending time with her family. If two things could define Irene’s life it was her strong faith in God and the importance of family.
Irene is survived by her son Larry (Ellen) Day of Shell Rock; daughter Marcia (Lyle) Bair of Keswick; sister Arnelda Knipfel of Iowa Falls; grandchildren Shelly (Brian) Dix, Sarah (Preston) Titmus, Adam (Jennifer) Bair, Meredith (John) Rumohr, Nathan (Kellie) Bair; great grandchildren Bailey Dix, Dawson Dix, Henry Bair, Ella Bair, Brody Bair, Burkley Bair, Bristol Bair, Noelle Rumohr and Isla Rumohr; along with many nieces and nephews.
