Evelyn Mae Wickwire, 94

Evelyn Mae Wickwire, 94, of Allison, formerly of Aredale, passed away Saturday, October 7, 2023, at the Rehabilitation Center of Allison. She was under the care of Cedar Valley Hospice. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, October 14, 2023, at the New Hope United Methodist Church - Aredale Center. Visitation will be held two hours prior to the service at the church on Saturday. Burial will take place in the Harlan Cemetery in rural Dumont. Woodley Funeral Home of Allison is caring for Evelyn and her family.

Evelyn was born November 5, 1928, at Oelwein, Iowa, to Nels P. Nelson and Ulla (Bjorklund) Nelson. She attended a rural Fayette County School for eight years and graduated from Oelwein High School, Oelwein, Iowa.

in 1954 Evelyn was married to Vernon L. Jensen, Waterloo, Iowa. They later divorced. She then met a dapper younger man at the Janesville Dance Hall. On March 8, 1959, Evelyn was united in marriage to her soul mate, Leland Glen “Wick” Wickwire, at the United Methodist Church in Aredale, Iowa. They lived on an acreage west of Aredale for 60 years. On August 1, 2019, they moved to Elm Springs Assisted Living in Allison, Iowa. In November 2022, Evelyn moved into the Rehabilitation Center of Allison.

Evelyn was known by many relatives and friends as “Aunt Money”. She enjoyed doing decorative wood crafts, crocheting, cooking, baking and always trying a new recipe. Evelyn and Wick enjoyed taking off in their motor home for camping, fishing, and attending blue grass festivals all over the Midwest. She also enjoyed gardening and sharing the surplus with others. Evelyn loved to watch and feed the birds. Over the years, she and Wick raised several litters of dachshund puppies whom they adored. She loved to write letters and send cards to her family and friends.

On January 3, 1989, Evelyn retired from working 28 years at the Farm Service Agency (USDA) in Hampton, Iowa. She served as the treasurer and secretary for 14 years for the Methodist Worship Center in Aredale.

Survivors include her husband Leland, nieces Kareen Sharff, Fayette, Iowa; Charlet See, Gardner, Kansas; an adopted niece Connie Dangelsar, Winona, Minnesota; nephew Thomas Walker, Houston, Texas and numerous great and great-great nephews and nieces. She is also survived by brother-in-law Earl Schuler and brother in-law Keith and Yuvonda Wickwire and their children.

She was preceded in death by her parents Nels and Ulla Nelson; an infant brother Willis Nelson and brother Charles Nelson; three sisters and brothers-in-law Laura (Melvin) Burco, Caroline Blunt and Lela (Paul) Walker; two nephews Dennis Burco and Leland Blunt; in-laws Lester and Daisy Wickwire and sister-in-law Giula Schuler.
