Dennis “Jack” Gene Ascher, 75

Dennis “Jack” Gene Ascher, 75, of Alburnett, Iowa, passed away on Sunday, October 13, 2024, at his home surrounded by family. Per his wishes, cremation has taken place, and no services will be held at this time. Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service of Marion is assisting the family.

Born on June 1, 1949, in Charles City, Iowa, to Harley and Helen (Swinton) Ascher, Jack was a man who lived a life filled with humor and love. He attended country school through the 8th grade and graduated from Greene Community High School in 1967. Jack pursued auto body repair at University Trade School in Omaha, Nebraska, before being drafted into the United States Marine Corps in 1969, where he served his country.

Upon returning to the Clarksville/Greene area after his honorable discharge, Jack found work doing auto body repair, helped his parents on their farm, and started a long career with the U.S. Postal Service. He retired after 30 years at the Greene, Iowa Post Office, but his hard work never stopped-he was a man of many skills. Jack loved the outdoors, often hunting, fishing, or cooking wild game in creative ways that delighted those lucky enough to try them. He was always busy with projects on the farm, whether fixing something or helping his grandchildren turn scraps into new creations-his hands were never idle.

At home, Jack was a devoted protector of his wife, Jeri, his partner for 53 years, and cherished spending time with his family. He found joy in watching his grandchildren, laughing at almost everything they did. Jack brightened their days with his thoughtful group texts filled with love, encouragement, and his dry humor that always made them smile. Though a man of few words, when Jack spoke, you knew to listen. His humor and wisdom always left an impact. Humble and kind, he was quick to offer help, even to strangers. One of the sharpest men we were lucky to know, Jack was also a voracious reader, rarely without a book or Kindle in hand, with a particular love for westerns.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Jeri Ascher of Alburnett; three children, Lori Ascher of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Lisa (Chad) Vance of Charles City, and Bobby (Stephanie) Ascher of Alburnett; four grandchildren, Dakota (Harley) Vance, Alexis (Joshua) Tharp, and Dylan and Dalilah Ascher; and one brother, Ronald (Nettie) Ascher of Greene, Iowa. Jack leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and family, and will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Harley and Helen Ascher, and his brother, Bob Ascher.
