It’s been 15 years since the Open Door Youth Center in Clarksville first opened its doors. The anniversary will be celebrated March 24 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. with cake and ice cream and a concert by The Elim Arrival.
The youth center was originally started by a group of moms praying for their teenage children. It provides an after-school program in a positive environment for kids in the community. Although the center originally started serving with students in fifth to twelfth grades, everyone is welcome now, including younger children, as long as they are willing to follow the rules and structure. Currently, the Youth Center also houses the food pantry.
Youth group meets Wednesday from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. with games and a devotion or Bible study. On Friday and Saturday evenings from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. the center is also open for kids to hang out and play games like air hockey, board games and video games.
Board member Deb White said that after 15 years some of the kids who originally visited the youth center are now the parents.
