Is there anything more refreshing on a hot July day than a dish of homemade ice cream? Stephen and Nellie Kaus at the Whistling Thistle Farmstand in Shell Rock have recently started offering the sweet treat during regular hours along with their usual fair of fresh, organic local vegetables.
“One of our friends from church offered to make us homemade ice cream, and it’s really good ice cream, some of the best ice cream I’ve had recently,” said Stephen Kaus. “We started out with strawberry, and then we have mulberries, and we made some mulberry jam with it, and so he’s been making mulberry ice cream. So there’s mulberry ice cream and chocolate ice cream. We’re charging a dollar a scoop, so it’s a really good deal. … We’ll keep it going as long as people are buying it.”
The farm stand, located at 905 S Cherry St. in Shell Rock is open Monday, Tuesday and Friday from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday 9 a.m. to noon.
Stephen and Nellie Kaus have been working on their dream of providing locally produced vegetables in Shell Rock for over a year now. They don’t want their farm stand to be a novelty. They want it to be part of life.
