Dr. Elaine Eshbaugh helped 45 Clarksville community members put on their “dementia goggles” to better understand dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.
Eshbaugh, Ph.D., is associate professor of gerontology (aging) at University of Northern Iowa. She spoke to about 45 people — 31 of whom signed in — at Community United Methodist Church in Clarksville on April 13.
Participants were asked to put their arms out straight and compared that to the viewing area of a healthy mind. They were shown to shape their hands around their eyes at the size of a pair of safety goggles. That’s similar to early stage dementia, Eshbaugh said. Tightening the hands to small circles around each eye, she compared this view to dementia goggles.
