A tribute to fallen heroes

Two years ago, Vietnam veteran Matt Nutt of Clarksville, a member of the Waterloo West High School Class of 1965, travelled to Washington D.C. on an honor flight. He paused at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial to honor classmates killed in action, and David Allbaugh captured a photo for The Courier.
     Sometime later, classmate Larry DeMaris asked another classmate, Stephen Levey, if he would consider painting a portrait from the photograph.
     Levey took the challenge in stride, and six months later had created a portrait with the names of fallen classmates David Paulsen, Mark Ellsworth, Merle Fagerlind, Robert Deyo, Russ Halley and Stephen Woodard highlighted on the wall.
     When offered a print to West High, they offered to permanently display the painting on the wall next to the national Bellamy Award the high school received in 1965.
