Some 160 people listened to the more pleasant sounds of the Civil War (music, not gunfire) as they attended the Liberty Band of Iowa concert for the 15th Anniversary Remembrance of 9/11 at the Reading Park Bandstand in Clarksville on Sunday, Sept. 11. The band performed tunes either penned during or popular in the Civil War Era.
“It takes me back, and now I hear the music my great-grandfather heard,” Larry Voigts of Clarksville said in thanking the band after the concert. His great-grandfather fought at the Battle of Fort Donelson and at Shiloh.
Mayor Val Swinton read statistics on responders who died assisting at the 9/11/2001 attacks at the World Trade Center in New York City. Of the 2,977 victims killed in the September 11 attacks, 411 were emergency responders in New York City who responded. This included: 343 firefighters of the New York City Fire Department; 37 police officers of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey Police Department; 23 police officers of the New York City Police Department; and eight emergency medical technicians and paramedics from private emergency medical services.
