Shell Rock has a rich artistic heritage, and this year, they’re determined to celebrate it, as they gear up for the first annual River Arts Festival on October 14.
“25 years ago, we had a smelt feed at the Sportsman’s Club that was very popular. That and the arts are the basis. We wanted to bring that back,” Mayor Larry Young said. “It kind of came about as Barbara Dilly painted the backdrop [at city hall]. She’s not the only artist. We want … their work seen.”
Dilly posited the idea of wedding the love of local art to residents’ love for the river, and the Shell Rock River Art Festival was born.
The Festival will celebrate the work of Shell Rock artists Lorraine Kramer, Ruth Cousins, Barbara Dilly and Jami Cooper, as well as former residents Bruce Litterer and Henry Apfel. These artists have created murals which beautify Shell Rock, or have portrayed the city in pencil drawings and oil paintings.
