Every year, approximately 30 students from across Iowa are chosen by local electric cooperatives for the Iowa Youth Tour to join about 1700 other students from throughout the country on a tour of Washington D.C.
Dawson Schmitt of Clarksville represented the Butler County REC at the Iowa Youth Tour in Washington D.C. June 8 to 15.
The group visited many historic sites throughout D.C. including the Washington monument, Holocaust memorial and the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial.
Most impactful for Schmitt was his visit to the National 9/11 Pentagon Memorial. The students visited at night to see the memorial benches glowing with light in memory of each person who died during the attack on the Pentagon.
