Saluting our Veterans: Ben DeWitt

Ben DeWitt of Shell Rock enlisted as a private in the Marine Corps on March 10, 1966 and served in the Marines until March 1972. In 1978, he joined the Naval Reserve, and served in the Navy until his retirement in 1997.
     DeWitt enlisted because he felt it was his responsibility as a citizen to serve. And he came from a family that felt the same way. His three brothers and two sisters were all in the service. Between them all, there were DeWitts in the Air Force, Navy, Army and Marines.
     “We thought it was our duty,” DeWitt said.
     From Des Moines, he was flown to San Diego, California for basic training, where days were filled with pushups, jumping jacks and running.
