The sound of revving engines could be heard in Shell Rock Saturday morning as about 70 bikers and motorists set out to help pay medical expenses for a very precious bundle of joy, McKenna Hovenga.
Hovenga is back home in Shell Rock after spending weeks in the Mayo Clinic Pediatric Intensive Care Unit diagnosed with a skull fracture and brain bleeds following an incident on May 2 when the then 7-week-old was struck by a stray softball. The care that she received resulted in upwards of $500,000 in medical bills.
McKenna’s story has attracted statewide and even worldwide attention as supporters have rallied around the baby and her parents, Lee and Kassy Hovenga, praying for a complete recovery. A YouCaring fundraiser raised $76,866. Updates on McKenna’s progress are posted regularly at the Healing for McKenna Facebook page and www.healingformckenna.com
The benefit run took riders from The Cooler in Shell Rock to Allison, Dumont, Aredale, Marble Rock, Horton and Clarksville. The benefit also included a silent auction, raffle and bean bag tournament at The Cooler and a meal at Doc’s Tap in Clarksville.
