A staunch supporter of Clarksville wrestling passed away this winter, but his legacy lives on.
"Memorials may be directed to … Clarksville [Freestyle] Wrestling Club," stated Vernon Hassman's obituary.
Hassman, 97, of Waverly, a longtime area farmer, formerly of the rural Clarksville and Plainfield area, died Jan. 11, 2015.
On March 2, his family gave a memorial gift to the Clarksville Freestyle Club.
Though he helped out with Clarksville High School wrestling over the years, Hassman did not wrestle in his high school years at Parkersburg, where he graduated in 1934. He began his wrestling career at the Iowa State Teachers' College in 1938, now known as the University of Northern Iowa, when he went out for the sport.
Read more from Hassman's daugters and a former Clarksville High School assistant wrestling coach who practiced with Hassman in the March 26 Clarksville Star.
