Seven-week-old McKenna Hovenga of Shell Rock is at St. Mary’s Hospital at Mayo Clinic for skull fractures and brain bleeds after she was struck on the hor ead by a stray ball in a freak accident while watching her father play at a softball game in Shell Rock.

According to family members posting on a Facebook page, Healing for McKenna, the baby was transported to Waverly Health Center on May 2 and taken by helicopter to St. Mary’s Hospital at Mayo. The baby’s parents, Lee and Kassy Hovenga, along with Aunt Laura Heise, are asking for prayers for McKenna’s recovery.

A YouCaring fundraiser has reached $35,321 of a $50,000 goal to raise funds for Hovenga’s medical expenses. A local bank account has also been set up for donations.

“The care that McKenna has received so far is upwards of $500,000 already, and we still have a long way to go,” said Heise.
