“If we teach today’s students as we taught yesterday’s, we rob them of tomorrow,” educational reformer John Dewey once said.
North Butler’s student teacher this year, Mikayla Riley, agrees. Riley is working in English teacher Susan Ackerman’s class until mid-October.
“For me, [Dewey’s quote] is a reminder that education needs to be fluid, and that school is where students learn a lot of skills that can apply to their lives outside of school,” said Riley. “It’s important to prepare them.”
Riley majors in English education for middle school and high school students at Wartburg College in Waverly. She also has a minor and a teaching endorsement in Spanish, and plans to student-teach Spanish at North Hampton for seven weeks, after she finishes her time at North Butler.
