“Every day is a new day; try to make it positive” is Heather Maakestad’s motto. North Butler recently welcomed Maakestad to the staff as a preschool teacher.
She said working with kids is in her blood. Her mom is a teacher, and her grandma was a teacher.
“I get energy from the kids and enjoy spending time with them,” Maakestad said.
After graduating from Waukon high school, she studied at UNI, where she earned her bachelor’s degree in early childhood education and an elementary endorsement for special education through third grade. She had a literacy minor and earned a language and reading endorsement through 8th grade. After graduating, she taught for a year in the Quad Cities and four years in New Hampton. After two years off, she’s back to teaching at North Butler.
