New floodplain maps for Butler County

New preliminary floodplain maps have been released for Butler County, and the biggest changes in the floodplain come in Clarksville, where the floodplain has been expanded since the last maps were issued in 2011 to include a certain portion of the southwest side of town.
     The biggest change that comes with being included in the floodplain is that affected homeowners will have to purchase flood insurance when the new maps go into effect.
     “The thing I’d like people to know is whether or not they’re in them. They can stop by city hall to check out the maps and make sure they know whether or not they’re in the floodplain,” said Clarksville Mayor Val Swinton.
     On Feb. 6 the Iowa Dept. of Natural Resources and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) met with community leaders. They also hosted an open house at the Allison library to present the maps to Butler County residents and answer questions.
