Mission to Mexico

This July, two Butler County residents, Kortney Sherburne of Aplington and Jason Edeker of Allison, were among 30 who traveled with the Emmanuel Covenant Church group to spend a week working at the Emmanuel Kingdom Ministries Children’s Home in Mexico.

Sherburne has sponsored a child at the home since February, and when she heard her aunt and uncle were going on the trip, she decided to join them and meet her sponsor child. Edeker didn’t have a mission trip to Haiti planned for this year, and Sherburne encouraged him to join in the trip to Mexico. So, he did.

The church group included everyone from young teenagers to older adults. Once at the children’s home, they split into teams. One group of teams worked on projects to improve the children’s home, while others, including Edeker and Sherburne, helped with kid’s activities.               For Sherburne, the most important part of the mission—and of sponsoring children—is to show them they are loved. Some of the children don’t have loving families.

“It’s very important to give as much love to them as possible while they’re there,” Sherburne said.
