Darwin and Delores (Dee) Winkowitsch will mark 55 years of marriage on September 1.
The couple met in high school in Allison. Their first date was to see the movie “The Ten Commandments” at a theater in Hampton. Two years later, in 1963, they were married at St. James Lutheran Church. They had a wedding reception in the basement and served cake, sandwiches, nuts, punch and coffee.
Darwin’s first job was driving a gravel truck. He then worked for farm machinery dealer Bill Jacobs for five years and at the Carnation factory in Waverly for six years.
The couple have three sons. The boys were very active in 4-H, and Darwin served as a 4-H leader for 10 years. In high school, the boys were very athletic and involved in many sports and activities. The family also raised horses and showed them at fairs and horse shows.
