North Butler Junior High presented the musical “Annie” with performances Thursday and Friday.
“Annie” tells the story of an eleven-year-old girl at the Municipal Girls Orphanage, who was left a note by her parents. She tries to escape, but is caught by Miss Hannigan, the girls’ evil orphanage matron. Hannigan forces all the girls to vigorously clean the orphanage before starting their day of work sewing. Annie then successfully escapes in the laundry when the laundry man comes, and meets a friendly stray dog, Sandy. But eventually a policeman catches Annie and brings her back.
Just then, Grace Farrell, assistant to billionaire Oliver Warbucks, comes looking for an orphan to spend the Christmas holiday at the mansion. She asks to take Annie, and Miss Hannigan agrees.
Annie wants to find her parents. So Mr. Warbucks offers a $50,000 reward to any couple who can prove they are her parents. When no one could, he offered to adopt her. But imposters Ralph and Shirley Mudge show up claiming to be her parents. Miss Hannigan gave them information to “prove” they were Annie’s parents in return for half of the reward. Warbucks does not believe them, and requests to keep Annie a little longer for a Christmas party. Annie doesn’t want to be sent with her supposed parents. President Franklin Roosevelt stops by with the secret service and reveals that Annie’s parents were actually the late David and Margaret Bennett. Mr. and Mrs. “Mudge” and Miss Hannigan are arrested by the Secret Service, and Roosevelt reveals his New Deal for the economy.
