Owner Jay Skarr and Allison manager Scott Lursen discuss the grocery business.
Jay Skarr started sorting bottles at P & G Supermarket in Belmond as a 12-year-old. His motto, “be the best you can be,” has paid off. On April 3, he will be celebrating 40 years as owner of J & C Grocery, serving the communities of Allison, Dumont and Sumner.
“I started as a kid, liked it, and stayed with it,” Skarr said. “It’s what I’ve done my whole life.”
Skarr’s first day on the job was a cold one.
“One day I saw there was a mess beside the store. I talked with Phyllis, who owned the store, and asked her if she needed someone to sort bottles and help around the store. She said yes,” Skarr said. “It was winter—and so cold that she kept telling me to come back in the store, as she was worried I was getting chilled. I stayed out there till [the glass bottles] were all cleaned up.”
