Heery Woods Halloween Hike

The annual Halloween Hike the evening of Oct. 23 was more popular than ever this year with beautiful (though slightly chilly) weather and 180 participants.
This year’s theme was “Stranger Things.”
     Karla Voss, Barb and Steve Brunsma, Mindy Pecha and Tom Hoodjer led the way as guides with lanterns as groups of hikers trekked the trail at Heery Woods.
     Steve Martin, portraying a lightning bug, was the first presenter along the trail. Martin told kids that lightning bugs are a type of beetle. There are 170 species of lightning bugs that have been identified in just North America.
     “I’m pretty sure if it weren’t for that one band, we’d be the most popular beetles in the whole world,” Martin said.
