GREENE - Fires on the roof of the North Butler High School building will delay the start of the school year for the middle and high schools.

Superintendent Joel Foster said the building had “multiple fires” on the roof Sunday and Monday.

He said workers installing a roofing product with heat overheated some materials, which caused the fires. Emergency crews put out the first fire Saturday. Another one was extinguished Monday, and had been smoldering since late Saturday.

School was scheduled to start Wednesday, but smoke damage has delayed grades 7 through 12 until Monday, August 28. Grades pre-kindergarten through 6 will still start on Wednesday as scheduled.
