Clarksville residents may notice fire hydrants around town have been color coded—all thanks to one ambitious young man, Dawson Holub, who made sprucing up the hydrants his Eagle Scout project.
Color-coded hydrants should help toward increasing efficiency and improving response time for the fire department.
“We went through and tested the hydrants with a meter to see what the flow was, so we could have that plotted and ready to go when they were painted,” said fire chief Jon Myers. “It opened our eyes to hydrants we wouldn’t think had as much water, and some we figured had more.”
The completely red hydrants yield less than 500 gallons per minute. Orange hydrants yield between 500 and 1000 gallons per minute, and green hydrants provide between 1000 and 1500 gallons per minute.
