Fertilizer spill in Allison leads to stream contamination

An Allison Farmers Cooperative employee had a tank of 32 percent liquid nitrogen fertilizer catastrophically fail Thursday morning, releasing 800 gallons of the substance onto Birch, Sixth and Spruce streets.

Allison FC employees then washed the pool of fertilizer off the streets, causing it to funnel into North Railroad Avenue storm sewer and ultimately into the small creek on the south side of town.

Due to not reporting the spill within six hours to DNR, the cooperative was in violation of required law. They did eventually notify them on Friday, 26 hours after the spill.
