Superintendent Joel Foster believes what happens to people in life is guided by the decisions they make.
Foster came from a rough background as a child, and attended high school in Riceville. His goal in becoming an educator was to try to make sure kids from a similar background as his would not get left behind. He received his undergraduate degree in physical education from Upper Iowa University in 1990, but didn’t take his first teaching job till Jan 2001.
In the meantime, he did construction work, served as a counsellor at a boys’ ranch, and drove a truck for Coca-Cola.
“There are times I think some of those life lessons [I learned] have taught me more than my Master’s and my specialist programs ever could have,” Foster said. “I’ve learned a lot about dealing with people.”
