Courthouse spotlight: Butler County Recorder

The Butler County Recorder’s office, created by the Territory of Iowa legislative assembly in 1839, has preserved the history of the county through land records since 1854 and through birth, marriage and death records since 1880.
     And that’s a tradition of service that Recorder Janice Jacobs continues, assisted by her deputies, Roxann Geelhoed and Brandon Kampman.
     “The recorder is charged with not only recording documents but maintaining and preserving them for the future,” Jacobs said. “Every piece of real estate is represented by a formal recorded document.”
     The recorder is responsible for recording deeds, mortgage contracts, assignments and releases, federal and state tax liens, affidavits, plats and surveys, section corner certificates, military service records, easements, condemnations, trade names, leases, 28E and Drainage Agreements Bills of Sale, Articles of Incorporation, Financing Statements and numerous other documents.
