Hours at the Butler County Veteran’s Affairs Commission have been expanded to include Mondays. Commissioner Tom Heckman will now work Monday to Thursday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
“It’s an extra day for outreach, so I can get out a little more to help out with the community more,” said Heckman.
Heckman has served as director of the Butler County Veteran’s Affairs Commission for two years and previously served in the military for 33 years. He is grateful for the supervisors’ support and the opportunity to spend more time in his dream job, helping veterans at nursing homes and throughout the community. When he comes to the supervisors with problems, he said, they don’t turn him away. They ask how they can make his job easier and help more veterans. Before the schedule change, he had built up about 120 hours of annual leave because it was hard for him to take any time off with the demands of the position.
Heckman lives within walking distance of the office, and often comes back in on his own time to try to get paperwork pushed through or to respond to phone calls.
