Clarksville City Council members approved a resolution authorizing a community garden at their April 15 meeting. This 4-H service project will give local residents the opportunity to lease plots to create their own flat ground or raised bed gardens.
Jessica Lovrien presented the proposal from the Jackson Lucky Clovers to develop a community garden at 540 W. Wilmans Street. This city-owned property is only allowed to be used for green space and other applicable activities, per the terms of the recent flood buyout.
The proposal, which was approved as a pilot project for the 2019 calendar year, will feature plots divided into 16-by-16-foot sections. The 4-H group has planned for 13 plots, but there is room for at least 10 additional spaces if public interest is higher than anticipated.
Garden spaces can be used for vegetables, herbs, flowers, or whatever individual residents would like to plant. The Lucky Clovers, with support from the Butler County Extension office, are investigating the possibility of adding fruit trees to the far side of the alley.
