Clarksville not game for football sharing

The Clarksville school board decided against football sharing at their meeting Wednesday night, based on concerns that the proposed details as discussed by the school superintendents were not equitable. The agreement died for lack of a motion.
“It’s two one-sided…” said board member Shelley Maiers. “There would be no benefit to Clarksville Schools at all. We would have to bus everyone to North Butler, wear North Butler uniforms and use their coaches. Why do it?”
Phil Barnett, another board member, said his biggest concern was that if the agreement were made, under the given conditions perhaps only a half dozen Clarksville students would play. He also expressed doubt as to whether the agreement was one the North Butler school board and community would have supported.
“Monday I asked for an equitable agreement. That should have been an objective…” said Justin Clark. “I’ve reviewed the numbers, and I think the Clarksville school can support its own football team for another two years. We can talk again in another year and a half.”
But if there’s a future discussion, chances are it will be between the two boards themselves. “I feel as a board we want to do this, but I think as a board member, we’d like to get together with the other board,” said Tim Backer. “I do not think they agreed to this, so I would like to get with them and talk with them. We could share our concerns, and they could share theirs. I know we could come up with some kind of an agreement. But I do not feel this is going to work.”
