The Clarksville Softball team took home the gold in the U18 division at the Labor Day softball tournament in Waterloo at the Riverfront Stadium ball diamonds this past weekend.
“I think Clarksville has been bringing a team to this tournament for almost 15 years. The parents coach it. This is the first year that this group of girls have won it! They took second two years ago,” said softball coach Katie Wedeking.
On Saturday, the Clarksville girls played Cedar Falls Roar and won 3-0. Then they played the Cedar Falls Tigers and won 3-1. Sunday morning, they played Bomb Squad at 8 a.m. and won 7-3. After winning those three games, they had won their pool and were the No. 1 seed going into bracket play. They played Cedar Falls Roar again and won 6-0, and then played Western Dubuque in the finals and won 2-0.
“It’s a great tournament because most of the teams are club travel teams with girls who play softball year-round,” said Wedeking. “So for our high school girls, who play four sports, to come out and compete with these teams is pretty awesome! A lot of the pitching is similar to what they saw down at the state tournament.”
