Celebrating Pork Month: Niehaus and Feldman Genetics

Carl Niehaus and his family started raising spotted hogs in 1931 as the Niehaus Brothers. That tradition has continued with his son Darwin Niehaus, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren, and the Niehaus name is widely recognized in the swine industry.
     This summer at the Iowa State Fair, Darwin Niehaus was inducted into the Iowa Spotted Hall of Fame. Niehaus is one of the founders and a former president of the Butler County Pork Producers.
     “Darwin Niehaus quickly grasped the importance of elite genetics, acquired a strong work ethic, which is inherited in the Niehaus family, and took over the operation, calling it Niehaus Spot Farm from 1966 to 2002,” said Jack Wall, CEO of CPS Certified Pedigree Swine, who presented the award.
     Darwin and Sharon Niehaus graduated from Clarksville High School. When they were first married, Darwin Niehaus worked for Oliver. But his brothers were called into the service, and he came to the farm where he was born and raised to help his dad in 1962. The couple have lived there ever since.
