McWhirter says she enjoyed her job but looks forward to spending time with grandchildren
Butler County Assessor Deb McWhirter plans to retire July 1. She has served as assessor since 1990, but has worked in the assessor’s office since 1978.
McWhirter earned a teaching degree at UNI, and started her career as an administrative secretary at the bank in Allison. The Butler County assessor asked her if she’d be interested in working as clerk at the assessor’s office. She thought it over and took the job since she wouldn’t have to work nights or weekends. By the time her boss retired in 1990, McWhirter had prepared herself for the position of assessor.
“Everything has changed so much,” McWhirter said. “When I started here, it was all paper and pencil. We had big journals and kept everything on property record cards.”
Moving from paper records to digital records is the biggest change McWhirter remembered.
