At the Allison council meeting on Monday evening, bids for the asphalt street projects for Maple Street and a portion of North Railroad Street and sealcoating and repairs on various other streets were reviewed. The low bids for these projects came in at a total cost of $577,799.15–including a couple improvements added on to the base bid.
“However you slice it, the apparent low bidder is Blacktop Services,” said City Engineer Lee Gallentine.
Improvements approved included geogrid for additional reinforcement for the asphalt, which the engineer strongly recommended. The council also chose the option of designing N Railroad Street with a high traffic base rather than standard traffic base to further strengthen the street.
A third improvement approved was $8000 more of oil/binder for the sealcoat than was called for in the original specs. This change is to bring the sealcoating up to DOT specifications. Mark Steffus of Blacktop Services recommended this improvement to the base bid to bring the sealcoat’s quality up to par with the work his company generally does.
