An intensive housing study is currently underway in Butler County. Once finished, the study will give each city in the county an in-depth look at its current housing inventory and areas of need for local housing.
The Housing Needs Assessment study is sponsored by the Butler-Grundy Development Alliance (BGDA), and aims to pin-point areas of need that cities can use for development purposes.
Jeff Kolb, executive director of the Butler Grundy Development Alliance, says the study is currently in the surveying stage; he expects the whole process should be completed by June.
“We have volunteers who are driving every street of every town in the county and surveying each home,” Kolb said. “They’re basically doing a windshield survey of each house, and looking at thinks like paint, if it needs a new roof, or windows, and things like that. At the end of the process, we’ll have a document that will give each city a detailed look at their housing stock. We’ll be able to tell them, ’60 percent of your stock is 70 years old, and many of them need new roofs.’ That information will help cities if they need to apply for different grants, like a housing rehab grant, because you typically need a document like this to ask for those dollars.”
