It’s no understatement to say that Butler and Bremer counties have good soil, and good farmers who know how to utilize it.
One such farmer, Thomas Huck of Plainfield, was recognized at the Iowa State Fair Crop contest this August, taking home ribbons for Best Overall Soybeans, first place in soybean sweepstakes, first place Mid-Season Soybeans, first place Early Soybeans and sixth place soybean bundles. He also finished with fourth place alfalfa, fourth and fifth place in Hybrid Commercial Thirty Ears and fifth place in Hybrid Commercial Standard Bushel Basket Ear Field Corn.
Huck believes farming is all about hard work, and finding the faith and fortitude to press on through bad prices and bad weather.
“Be prepared for a lot of hard work and a lot of hours. Prepare for the unexpected. You don’t know what the weather or prices are going to do…” Huck said. “There are ups and downs. The important thing is to keep working hard and stick through it. It pays off in the end.”
