In May of 1992, Grace Barter saw a sign at a post office advertising a new position in Kesley: National Weather Service Cooperative Weather Observer. It sounded interesting, so she applied.
Recently, Brad Fillbach of the National Weather Service in Des Moines presented Barter an award for 25 years of service.
Barter takes river readings on the West Fork of the Cedar River and provides daily and monthly rainfall information for the city of Kesley.
“When I first started, it was all on paper. I kept a notepad, filled out a form, and at the end of the month sent it in,” Barter said.
