Baker-DeWitt Memorial Shelter dedicated: Friends and family gather to remember

Just under a year ago, a tragic car accident claimed the lives of Andrew Baker, 28, of Waverly and Jeff DeWitt, 41, of Shell Rock. Sunday, over a hundred friends and family members gathered for the dedication of the Baker-DeWitt Memorial Shelter, built in their honor at the Shell Rock Area Sportsman Club Disc Golf Course.
     “Be humble, work hard, expect nothing in return,” is inscribed on one plaque bearing Jeff DeWitt’s name.
     And that’s just what the community did, as family and friends volunteered to make the shelter a reality.
     Originally, Patty Franzen, a friend of the family, had wanted to plant a tree in memory of the young men, but driving by the park looking for a good spot for a tree, she noticed someone grilling on a tree stump. It was then she realized a picnic shelter would not only perpetuate the memory of Baker and DeWitt, but provide a useful addition to the community.
