Republicans chose Annette Sweeney as their nominee to run against Democrat Tracy Freese in the April 10 special election to fill the senate seat vacated by Bill Dix’s resignation. Sweeney was chosen at the nominating committee meeting March 20.
“She’s got the experience and can walk in there and start doing the job,” said a central committee member from Butler County.
Sweeney was appointed the Iowa Director for Rural Development for the USDA by President Donald Trump in late 2017. She served in the Iowa House of Representatives from 2009 until she was defeated by Pat Grassley in the Republican primary in 2012 after redistricting. As a representative, she served as chair of the Iowa House Agriculture Committee.
A row crop and cow-calf farmer who resides on her family farm near Buckeye, Sweeney is Executive Director of the Iowa Angus Association and a member of the Ellsworth Community Ag Advisory Council, Hardin County Extension Council and Iowa Women in Agriculture Board.
