Citizens from the Cedar Valley gathered at the Allison AMVETS post Saturday to voice questions and concerns to four area legislators.
Present were House District 54 Representative Linda Upmeyer, (R-Clear Lake); House District 50 Representative Pat Grassley (R-New Hartford); Senate District 25 Senator Bill Dix (R-Shell Rock); and Senate District 27 Senator Amanda Ragan (D-Mason City).
The discussion escalated when Waverly resident Gary Duneman questioned that local lawmakers are focusing on issues backed by the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) – a nonpartisan organization of state legislators – instead of those that directly affect Iowans.
“How am I supposed to believe you are protecting my best interests?” Duneman asked. “This isn’t representing Iowa, this is representing the one percent.”
